INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL GUIDELINES guidelines
Safety Injection Practices
1. Dispose of syringe and needle as a single unit. Do not bend, break or cut the needle after
use.
2. Dispose of syringe with needle as a single unit in the Puncture Proof Sharp Container.

4. Recapping needle is not recommended, however, there are times when it is done ( eg. when
filling I/V medicine from vial and giving medicine to patient through I/V branula).
5. It must be done safely by using“ One handed scoop method.
6. When using this method, it is essential that the second hand must be kept well away during
the entire scooping method.
1. Place the needle on flat surface.
2. Using same hand, hold the syringe and gently use the needle
to scoop up the cap.
3. Allow the cap to slide over the needle.

4. When the cap covers the needle completely, use the index
finger and thumb to secure the cap of the needle (to be held at
the bottom only).
5. Discard the needle and syringe as single unit into Sharp
Container.
